Wushamao was developed from , which originated during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, and became a formal part of official attire in the Sui Dynasty and gained popularity during the Tang Dynasty. By the Song Dynasty, the hat featured distinctive "wings" on either side, which were added to prevent officials from whispering during court sessions. And it was officially called "Wushamao" during the Ming Dynasty.

The Wushamao symbolized official status and was made from black gauze fabric. The hat's design evolved over time, with variations in shape and decoration reflecting the wearer's rank and the era's aesthetics.
